HOW I EDIT MY INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

As of recent, Instagram has really been grinding my gears with it’s ever changing algorithm. For the last time, can we please have the chronological set-up back? It’s not as if we haven’t complained enough. Anyway, this has made it even more critical that I edit my pictures properly and maintain interesting content. As of recent I have had a few question about what I use to edit my photos and I thought it would be a good idea to get it all down in one post.

Before I divulge all of my ever-so-secret filtering and editing methods, I would just like to point out I am in no way a professional editor; the content I post on my page is merely my own style. My style definitely changes all the time depending on my mood, where I am, or the season that we happen to be in. During Autumn/Winter I tend to stick to more of a warm toned mood board, whereas, during the Summer months my page is often more vibrant, with lots of blue, pink, and orange. At the moment I seem to have skipped ahead of Winter and opted for Spring-like colours (with A LOT of pink).

I would also like to point out that the majority of my pictures are taken in broad-daylight with either my iPhone or my Sony DSLR A390 (I still have the Olympus E-PL8 on my ‘yet-to-buy’ list). Trying to edit a picture that is poor quality, in awkward yellow lighting, or at night-time as an absolute no-go.

I may sound like a mega Instagram snob, but I really just enjoy photography and have always been into anything that involves getting creative. It’s also my number one favourite thing to do when I’m procrastinating from Uni work (which is all the time).

What app’s do I use?

My most used apps are VSCOcam (obviously), Lightroom, Afterlight, and Facetune. Most of these are free from the App Store but I do believe Afterlight comes at a 99p charge  (don’t hold me to it).

Most of the filters on VSCOcam are free, but if you want to get a larger selection you can buy bundles which also start at around 99p. Over the past couple of years I’ve purchased a few extra, including BBMA, HYPEBEAST, NEOCHA, CLEAN, and VALENCE. But obviously there are hundreds more to choose from. My most used presents are A6, HB2, M5, and sometimes C1 or G3.

Lightroom is my HOLY GRAIL app and I could not edit my pictures without it anymore. It’s the very first one I use, mostly to colour correct and adjust the lighting and/or exposure of my photos. However, the less I need to do this, the better. If there is a slight yellow cast over a picture, or if my cheeks are too rosy, I can adjust certain colours of the picture without altering any others within the photo. If a picture is really bad quality, however, this can be obvious and a picture will often come out too grainy (and not in the edgy way that has become popular recently).

I use Facetune scarcely and only if necessary. A red eye flash-back or a pimple is never a pretty addition to a photo, so if I want to get rid of it I will. You need to be careful with this app though because over-use of any of the effects can look totally ridiculous and fake. A great addition to Facetune, however, is the chromatic filter. This is great if I want to add a vintage/edgy effect.

Lastly, Afterlight is another app that I use for extra filters. The app also includes ‘dusty’ and ‘light leak’ effects, which again, I use occasionally for a vintage or edgy addition. I am careful not to overdo this though as it can look a bit much.

Another app I have, but only use for Instagram stories, is KiraKira. This can be used on pictures or videos to make light reflecting objects shine even more, or in other words, add more sparkle!

Without further ado, here are some photos that I’ve edited (old and recent) using the apps above!

OVERALL IM NOT TOO PICKY WITH A ‘CLEAN’ LOOKING INSTAGRAM, I MOSTLY JUST STICK TO A COLOUR THEME OR AT LEAST MAINTAIN GOOD QUALITY CONTENT. FOR ME, THERES DEFINITELY A BALANCE BETWEEN WHAT LOOKS GOOD AND WHAT’S PERSONAL TO ME. IT’S YOUR INSTAGRAM AFTER ALL, SO YOU DO YOU. I HOPE THIS HELPED IF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR SOME TIPS ON HOW TO STEP UP YOUR INSTAGRAM FEED OR ARE MERELY INTERESTED IN HOW I EDIT MY PICTURES.

Please feel free to check out my Instagram for a better snoop.
